My full name is Stephen Babu. I am in the 8th standard now. Yes, my mother told me what you are looking for. One day, a boy hit me on my head with a belt. I was very scared when I saw so much blood oozing out of my head. It was paining a lot too. No no. I did not get any stitches. My teacher rushed me to the doctor. He cleaned up the wound and applied a bandage around it. Yes, I went to school the next day.
I was in the 6th standard at that time. Why did he hit me? I’m not very sure. I usually get “Excellent” or “V.Good” in my homework. That day our teacher had given us all “V.Good.” I just asked that boy if he too had got “V.Good” in his homework. And he hit me with his belt. At that time the boy behaved like that with everyone. But now he has become a good boy. He doesn’t beat anyone.
This incident too happened when I was in the sixth standard only. One day, our principal suddenly announced a competition in our assembly. We had to work on the Rubix cube and align all the colours. Two other seniors and I raised my hands. I felt very scared after I raised my hand. I wondered if I would be able to solve it and if the others would laugh at me if I couldn’t do so. But I solved it in 56 seconds. The other two seniors took longer than me to solve it. So I won the first prize. Of course, I felt very happy when I won.
Yes, I like working on interesting projects. I love Science the most because our teachers give us interesting projects to work on. I also work on my own projects in my free time. I upload them on YouTube. Yes, I will send you the link after we finish chatting. Actually, you just have to go to YouTube and type ‘Stephen Babu.’ You will be able to see all the projects that I have created and uploaded so far. No one taught me how to do all this. I learnt it on my own. Yes, I usually am amongst the top five rankers in my class.
But I have failed too. Last year, I got typhoid during the exams. So I could not appear for two or three exams. Yes, they do mark “Absent” in the report card but overall, I had failed in my half-yearly exams. A few years back, my father’s elder sister passed away. So I had to miss my exams. So that time too I failed. I cried a lot when I saw the word “Fail” in my report card. I have always been one of the toppers in my class. And I felt very bad when I failed. But my parents consoled me. They said I was sick and I could always study harder and get better marks in my next exam.
Yes yes. I have a younger sister. And we fight a lot every day. She keeps disturbing me when I am working on my projects. I get very irritated. I ask her to leave me alone. But she does not listen to me. So I pinch her. She starts crying and complains to my parents. Yes, I do help her solve her Math doubts. My mother teaches her English and my father teaches her Science. But usually, she studies on her own.
Also, she does not know how to bat. But when we play cricket together, she will insist that she wants to bat only. I try to teach her how to bat. But she just doesn’t understand it. So she starts crying whenever I refuse to give her a turn. She pinches me when she gets angry at such times.
One day, we both were playing a game on our mobile. And we started fighting. I did not want to give her the phone or allow her to play the game. So I quickly hid it in my school bag. We fought for some time but she couldn’t find the phone. So she forgot about it. And I too forgot about it. And I ended up carrying the phone to school along with my bag the next day.
Now, we have strict rules in our school that we are not supposed to bring our phones to school. My father was searching for the phone in the house. He couldn’t find it. So he called up the number to try to locate it. And to my utter surprise, the phone started ringing in my bag in the middle of the class. My teacher stopped teaching when he heard the sound of my phone ringing. He found the phone in my bag and switched it off immediately. He then shouted at me and took away the phone itself.
My father beat me up when I told him everything that had happened in the school that day. And asked me never to do such things again. My teacher was good enough to come home personally and return our phone to us. Aahh…. Yes, my sister was smiling when she saw my father beating me and shouting at me.
Yes, I like to study. No, none of us goes to school now. Our teachers have formed a big group on WhatsApp. Every day, they send us three to four videos with instructions. We download the videos, put them in a pen drive and connect it to our TV. I watch the videos and do whatever they ask us to do. No, we cannot ask our teachers any doubts. Sometimes, I ask my parents some doubts. Yes, of course, they give us homework, ask us to study a particular lesson every day and even conduct tests. They give us test papers and we have to take a test on our own. Tomorrow I have to show them my test paper. Yes, there is a different group for my sister and she too follows the same pattern.
We live in a small village in Nagapattinam district. Yes, ours is a private school and our teachers are very good too. We have different divisions for girls and boys and there are about 35 to 40 students in each class. We have a timetable for snacks too. Every day we have to carry a particular kind of snack only. Nothing is available in our school. No, they don’t punish us if we carry different snacks.
Yes, I have been punished too. Once we had all returned from our PT period and we were talking loudly on our way back and in the classroom. So our teacher punished us all. Our teachers make us kneel on the floor for five minutes. After that, we can go back to our places.
Ah yes, my mother makes super sambhar. And I carry whatever she gives us for snacks every day. No, I don’t take part in any singing and dancing competitions. I am not interested in such things. I take part in all Science or Maths competitions. We go out on Sundays. There is a big ground near our house. I go there with my parents on my bicycle and we have a nice time there. No, I don’t remember anything else. So you can talk to my mother now.
